NEWS FROM THE NORTH SIDE
Back in the 70’s we would pack up “His 66” and head out exploring the good old USA. That was also the car we used at our wedding in 1971. On our Honeymoon we headed out west stopping at Mitchell, Badlands then on to the Black Hills. We spent a couple days in Keystone then ventured on to Yellowstone. We stopped at a lodge just outside the park and had a cozy little log Cabin. In the morning when we woke up we discovered it had snowed throughout the night. We decided to head on through the park that day as travel on the side roads was limited. We made a stop at Old Faithfull then on to the Hot Springs. We then headed on to Missoula Mt so my Aunt and Uncle could meet Janet. From there we headed to the coast following it to the Redwood National Park. From there it was back home following the scenic backroads.
Well this Oct was our 40th wedding anniversary and we had always planned to take the trip again and deep down we wanted to take “His 66” but the reality is it needs some work and a 5 speed transmission (so we would get better than 12 MPG) before we would venture out on a trip of that length especially this time of year.
We decided because our grandson Cameron would be starting school next year this would be our last chance to get him to Missoula to see his favorite Aunt Barbara and Uncle Ernie. We did have reservations about this but decided to go for it. Our plans did change a bit as we knew retracing the entire trip more than likely would not work so we planned on going as far as Missoula (Maybe into Idaho) then on home.
Well all went great as a good time was had by all Curt, Janet & Cameron as we took in the Corn Palace, Wall Drug, Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills. We stopped early each night and made sure there was a pool as Cameron loves the water. We headed for Yellowstone and as we pulled into Cody WY Cameron started to get homesick and wanted to see his brothers after talking to them on the phone that day. At that point (we had been gone a week) we decided to skip Yellowstone and head to Missoula so we could spend a few days with Barbara and Ernie. We kept Cameron busy and that along with a more regular routine (opposed to staying only a day or two in one spot) helped get us through the next few days.
We then headed for home thinking we would stop about half way home but what we did not realize was that with the Oil boom in ND finding a room especially late in the day is next to impossible. We stopped several times in Montana and in N Dakota and even called ahead only to find everyone was full. They told us most everyone was filled by 11:00 AM. We ended up driving the 1200 miles straight through.
A good time was had by all and Cameron was glad to be home playing with his older brothers. He had a lot to talk about when he went back to day care. We are glad we had this chance to take a trip with Cameron and show him some interesting places and hands on at a lot of interpreter centers. He enjoyed that. We plan to do the entire trip (Just the 2 of us) in the future. Hopefully in “His 66”. Since we got back we have been quite busy getting ready for winter and Christmas. Being gone for a couple weeks in the fall and you have a lot of catch up to do.
Remember to mark down June 2nd -3d on your calendar for our 28th annual Mopars in the Park.
Till Next Month
